·The new Varador 2000 regatta team was born with the aim of fighting for leading positions
The Varador Sailing Team is a new regatta team created by Varador 2000 to compete at the highest level in national competitions. Varador 2000, a reference shipyard in the Spanish nautical sector (winner of the“Shipyard of the Year” award in 2023), celebrates in this way its 40 years (1984-2024) of professional career at the service of nautical industry.
The Varador Sailing Team will compete in the ORC1 category with the sailboat Labianca (ex Matador), a 46-footer built by King Marine in 2005 originally designed for the IMS circuit, which was optimized with a bulb keel for ORC International in 2009. The design signature Marcelino Botín (Botín Carkeek Sailboat Designer), one of the most renowned naval designers worldwide, who has also designed the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team for the America’s Cup.
The new team will participate in various events on the 2024 ORC national calendar under the flag of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona (RCNB), such as the Conde de Godó Trophy, the SM la Reina Trophy and the Copa del Rey, among others. The objective, according to Varador 2000 sources, is to reach the Copa de Rey “with the team and the boat perfectly equipped and with the possibility of making the podium.” Looking ahead to the 2025 season, the team also plans to participate in the main national regattas and the ORC European Championship.
High-level crew and boat
The Varador Sailing Team is made up of a professional crew of high level and experience and with a great sporting record, with Luis Martínez Doreste at the helm as skipper, Jorge Martínez Doreste as Skipper, Toni Rivas as tactician, Pichu Torcida as second tactician, Ricardo Terrades as main trimmer, Tunte Cantero as spinnaker trimmer, Aleix Gelabert as genoa trimmer, Roberto Molina as strategist, Óscar Bachero in bow duties, and other expert and award-winning sailors. The owner of the boat is Elisabetta Quartaroli.
The Labianca has undergone a major refit in recent months “to turn it into a super competitive sailboat that can aspire to conquer any goal and rub shoulders with the best,” say the company that promotes the Varador Sailing Team. The refit, now in its final stretch, has been carried out at the Varador 2000 facilities and technical team in Arenys de Mar (Barcelona). The main elements that have been reviewed and tuned are: mast, rigging, hull, maneuvering, integral painting, new high-performance electronics, weight optimization, safety systems and a new set of sails from the North Sails 3Di range. The Varador Sailing Team will compete with a highly competitive boat that already has a great sporting record under its belt.
With the creation of this new regatta team Varador 2000 returns to high competition after a few years of hiatus. And he returns with a super experienced crew and an enviable track record, and a very competitive boat that has been updated to qualify for podium positions in all the ORC competitions in which it participates.
