Àlex Bernat, captain of the superyacht Tamara RD, comes from a family with a long seafaring tradition. He has been involved in the boating world since the age of 15 when he started working at Dofí Jets Costa Brava, a family firm founded by his grandfather. Now, at the age of 40 (he has spent the last fourteen years working as captain aboard superyachts), he is one of the promoters of the Spanish Yachting Professionals Association (AEPYR), which aims at boosting the sector and above all enhancing the status of yachting professionals.

Captain Bernat is a regular customer at Varador 2000. His visits to the shipyard at Arenys de Mar (Barcelona) date back many years. He has moored at the yard’s premises with many different yachts. As he says “Varador 2000 has always had excellent quality standards”. He has been the captain of Glamour (30-metre), Trotter (35 m.), D’Aristotelis (28 m.), Gloria Teresa (43 m.) and Jet Lag (30 m.). Now, at the helm of the Tamara RD, he has spent several weeks at Varador 2000 to prepare the yacht and several other weeks at Mataró Marina Barcelona – the marina, north of Barcelona, managed by Varador 2000 – before setting sail for the Mediterranean Sea during the high season.

“At Varador 2000 I feel very comfortable. It has a good technical service, well-trained professionals, competitive prices and excellent personal service” says the captain, who adds: “nevertheless, as in all shipyards, there are some aspects that could be improved, such as the dry dock area. However I do understand that Varador 2000 will soon expand its technical dry dock area, which is very good news”.

During the annual stay at Varador 2000, a thorough refit of different essential parts of the Tamara RD has been carried out: engines, generator, hydraulic system, bilge, bilge pumps, painting, underwater hull cleaning, antifouling, fire fighting systems, just to mention a few. “They have done a really good job” ensures the captain, who has closely followed all the works carried out on his yacht. Bernat supervises with real knowledge as he holds a diploma in Marine Surveying obtained at the Lloyd’s Maritime Academy. “I love the technical aspects of yachts. Should I one day decide to change career I would probably dedicate myself to surveying” he ensures.

His passion for technical aspects of yacht building has allowed him to actively participate in the construction of the Tamara RD, an Admiral 35, designed by Luca Dini and built by Cantieri Navali di Lavagna (CNL) in 2010 “Having been able to take part in the yacht’s construction process in Italy has been great for me, both from a technical and a personal point of view. I now hold a knowledge of the boat and its functioning that gives a new dimension to my gob” says proudly Àlex Bernat. The 35-metre Tamara RD boasts a 7.4-metre beam, an aluminium hull and superstructure and is for private use only. It can accommodate 8 guests and in high season it sails with a crew of 5.

Captain Bernat is very critical of the Public Administration. He calls for better tax treatment for Spanish shipyards, which despite having been greatly penalized over the last years “have maintained high technical and professional standards, just like Varador 2000”. Likewise, he believes that there is still a great deal to do as far as maritime qualifications are concerned. He guarantees that from AEPYR – which already has about a hundred members – they will fight for the rights of all yachting professionals.
