Varador 2000 successfully manages the painting and refit of MY Maridome, a highly complex technical operation

Exceptional finishes and zero pollution in the port of Arenys de Mar


Varador 2000 has just completed one of its most complex works: the repainting, afloat, of the Maridome, a 54 metre superyacht that arrived at its technical base in Arenys de Mar at the end of September with a severely battered hull. To be able to paint the Maridome, Varador 2000 enveloped the boat in a spectacular lining of scaffolding and plastic awnings that enabled the painters and other operators participating in the refit to work. The floating cover prepared for this complicated operation weighed 35,000 kilos; the combined weight of the scaffold and awning.

Varador 2000 managed this highly complex work, which required minute detailing to achieve exceptional finishes, while ensuring it generated zero pollution in the waters of the port of Arenys de Mar. In total, 580 square metres of surface area were repainted, encompassing the whole steel hull and the aluminium superstructure. The shipyard’s team of superyacht painters took part in the process.

The yacht coating was programmed in seven stages (each with its corresponding lining to prevent contamination) that included three preliminary priming coats and three finishing coats. The whole process was performed scrupulously, in line with the most stringent quality standards and using the best paints on the market.

Paul Bell, captain of the superyacht Maridome, is delighted with the work by the Varador 2000 team: “the finishes are top quality and both I and the yacht’s owner – who made a visit to inspect the boat before the process was completed – rate the work carried out very highly”. Bell says that “the team of Varador 2000 painters is one of the best in Europe, perhaps the best”.

The captain of the Maridome also mentioned the bad weather this winter that made it difficult to work at times, “but despite this, the anticipated timings were met pretty well”. While the repainting work was being carried out on the Maridome –which took around six months–technicians at Varador 2000 also performed other repair and maintenance work on the exterior wooden elements (carpentry) and the internal water installation. The technical layover at Varador 2000’s facilities was also used to carry out the usual annual maintenance checks of the engines, generators and other components.

The Maridome –built by Brooke Marine (UK) in 1989– has a crew of nine sailors and four officers who stayed on the boat while all the works were being carried out. The Maridome can accommodate up to ten people, apart from its crew. It is used privately.
